ROUND 1 V Melbourne Renegades

Lost in 5 sets 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25:17, 12:15
It was a challenging start to the year for the team, with two players withdrawing on the eve of the season and along with Damon and Ben heavily involved in the organisation of the Club and the day and Jack due to arrive late, we hit the court very unprepared. The first set reflected this with the wrong line up, allowing Renegades to build an early lead and hold it comfortably throughout. Some changes in the second set helped steady the ship with Damon and Ciaran offering more options through the middle and Abe and Brandon pass hitting but we still couldn’t bridge an early deficit.
Pleasingly for a young team, everyone remained calm and continued to communicate well and work together to play a simply brand of consistent volleyball. In the third and fourth sets, Ben and Tristan were able to control the game through their setting thanks to improved passing from Jakob, Ciaran and Jack and a much more disciplined blocking structure. We looked far more dangerous in attack with Ciaran leading the way, supported by great contributions all over the court including Joe out of 2, and more consistent serving execution. The final set was decided by 2 points and could have gone either way but we couldn’t quite contain their left handed opposite hitter.
It was a positive start to the season and gives us a great platform to improve and develop as a squad during the year.
